Out of Touch

Recently at work, Mr. Owner shouted from his office, “Who’s Gregor Mendel?”  He asks questions frequently, and often without context, so that I have to guess what information he wants.  For example, he recently asked, “Where’s the big apple?”.  I was laughing to myself, thinking through, “he has to know that it means NYC, so that can’t be it, and he’s not a fruit eater, so he’s not being literal, so he means...” before remembering that the barbecue truck he wanted to go to is often parked outside of a place called the Big Apple, so I looked up the address online.

In this case, though, I was immediately able to answer his question with, “Mendel’s the father of modern genetics.  He discovered dominant and recessive alleles through experiments with yellow and green bean plants.  They refer to them as Mendelian traits.”

He responded, “Please tell me you just looked that up today.”

“No, why?”

“He’s the google doodle for today.  He looks like Kelsey Grammer”.  After I didn’t respond to this, he asked, “You know who Kelsey Grammer is, right?”
“Um, no.” I had to reply.  I knew he’d ask who he was if I pretended.  Mr. Owner had fun repeating this story to several people that day, saying, “I don’t know why she works here.  She just knew it.”

I interjected, “Well, just a few weeks ago it came up in a book I was reading, so that’s why I was able to tell you so quickly.”

“You were reading a science book?” He asked incredulously.

“Well, no, well, sort of.  Cooking for Geeks, on the science behind cooking.”  This did not make me any less strange in his eyes.

In case you were curious, and I was, I googled images of Kelsey Grammer and Gregor Mendel, and they do indeed look alike:

I love my nerd friends. I am so proud of you for being able to spout off about Mendel like that!
